Help to build the law firm of tomorrow
We have launched a business and legal operations graduate scheme, to find the generation of professionals who will help build the law firm of tomorrow.
This is a unique law firm graduate scheme that encompasses every aspect of the rapid changes currently underway in the delivery of high end legal services. The two year programme will mirror our traditional training contract for new lawyers, but with a focus on different disciplines. Those who progress to full time roles are expected to drive our business strategy in the years to come.
The scheme sits within NRF Transform, our global change and innovation program. The scheme will be overseen jointly by Commercial Director, David Carter, and Innovation Director, Kate Tomlinson.
The work you'll do
The scheme is built around four six-month rotations through the following teams:
While Business and Legal Operations Trainees will always be within one of these teams, they will be assigned work flexibly and work in multi-disciplinary groups across all teams.
All rotations will be based in our London office, except for rotations through the Innovation Team, which is based in our Newcastle Hub. Innovation is at the heart of our Newcastle Hub, which was set up to give the firm space to trial new technology and ways of working. The role may also involve shorter placements in one of our 50+ other offices, globally. Accommodation and travel costs will be met for placements outside of London during the scheme.
Supporting you all the way
Those gaining places on the scheme will be given extensive support and are expected to perform at a high level. Graduates successfully completing the two year scheme will be offered permanent roles. In the following year, where appropriate qualifications will be offered, according to team. The scheme does not lead to a legal qualification.
In the first intake, up to two roles will be available on 4 March 2019, and four more roles will be available starting on 2 September 2019. After that, intakes will begin annually in September.
An impeccable academic record and intellectual rigour are prerequisites. We expect successful candidates to have at least AAB at A level (or equivalent) and be on track for a 2.1 (or equivalent). Any academic degree is acceptable.
You’ll have an enquiring mind, strong interpersonal skills, and the motivation to make constant progress. You’ll never stop pushing yourself forward, grasping every opportunity – both at home and abroad – that our firm has to offer. You’ll be interested in business too, and keen to build relationships within a firm that’ll help you make progress with purpose.
Starting salary: £38,000

How many business trainees will you take?
In 2019 up to 6 roles are available – up to 2 starting in March 2019, and up to 4 starting in September 2019. It is our intention that in future years we will take up to 4 business trainees, starting each September.
How many business trainees will be offered a permanent role?
When we take on a business trainee we are making an investment. We expect to retain a high proportion of business trainees, but the number we retain will be based on the number who reach an objective standard and business need, not a quota. Business trainees will be given a lot of support to reach this standard, and regularly appraised throughout the scheme, so they know how they are performing.
Where will I be based?
All rotations will be based in our London office, except for rotations through the Innovation Team, which is predominantly based in our Newcastle Hub. The role may also involve shorter placements in one of our 50+ other offices, globally. On completion of the scheme you will be located with the team you qualify into.
Will accommodation be provided on placements in Newcastle or other offices?
Accommodation will be provided on placements during the scheme and travel costs will also be met.
Does this scheme lead to a legal qualification?
No. This scheme is designed for graduates who would like to pursue in a career in law as an industry – which is different to being a lawyer. Will this scheme lead to a professional qualification?
The scheme sits within NRF Transform, our global change and innovation program, which encompasses a number of related but different disciplines. This scheme is designed to give a rounded exposure to several of those disciplines. On successful completion of the scheme, business trainees will join one of a number of teams, some of which are supported by professional qualifications. In those circumstances, you may be eligible (and may be required) to gain the relevant professional qualification.
This is a graduate role at a Law Firm. Do I need to have been to law school or hold a law degree?
No. However, we would welcome any evidence that you are interested in law as an industry, and have some understanding of it.
The role involves Legal Technology. Do I need to have a background in computer science or particular technology related qualifications?
No. However, we would welcome any evidence that you are interested in the application of technology to business, and have some understanding of it.

What does the assessment day include?
We hold assessment days for prospective business trainees. You can expect:
- a welcome by the NRF Transform team
- an interview with two senior members of the team
- a group exercise so we can assess how you work in a team
- lunch with our team and a guided tour of the London office.
As well as lots of enthusiasm, you will need to bring:
- your passport and any accompanying visas
- receipts for travel
- original certificates to confirm your academic achievements to date (e.g. school, university, as applicable)
